With Sarah Jesson
In this session, we had the pleasure of hearing from communications and PR expert Sarah Jesson, who shared her journey working alongside Deaf Aotearoa to promote the use of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).
Sarah highlighted how small actions, like learning and using a few basic signs, can make a meaningful difference in creating a more inclusive New Zealand. The message was simple but powerful: when more hearing New Zealanders give signing a go, the Deaf community feels more seen, valued, and included.
The session wasn’t just insightful, it was hands-on. Attendees got to learn a few everyday NZSL signs and experience firsthand how accessible communication strengthens connection. Sarah encouraged us to think about accessibility not as an add-on, but as an essential part of effective, respectful marketing.
Sarah brought a wealth of experience to the discussion. With a Bachelor of Communication Studies (Public Relations major) from AUT, she has worked across corporate communications, marketing, and local government.
Today, Sarah leads Breathe Public Relations, her Pāpāmoa-based agency specialising in PR, social media, and influencer marketing. Her work centres on helping organisations build strong, trusted reputations through storytelling, media engagement, and meaningful community connection.
Overall, the session was an inspiring reminder that accessibility is not just good practice — it’s good marketing, and it supports a more inclusive New Zealand for everyone.
