Big picture thinking

With David Downs from New Zealand Story

We recently hosted an engaging and entertaining session with David Downs from New Zealand Story, and it turned out to be an inspiring afternoon of insights, humour, and big-picture thinking. Over drinks and nibbles, attendees had the chance to connect with David, who brought his unique blend of business leadership, creativity and sharp wit to the room.

As the CEO of New Zealand Story, and a director on several boards including Chair of The Icehouse, David shared his perspective on why New Zealand is, in his words, a ‘global superpower’, even if we don’t always see ourselves that way. He walked us through the real value of the New Zealand brand on the world stage, how international audiences perceive us, and why that gives Kiwi businesses a competitive edge.

True to form, David blended serious insight with his trademark humour, shaped by his background as an actor, comedian, author, and cancer survivor. He highlighted the importance of telling authentic, compelling stories about who we are as a nation — stories that New Zealand Story helps craft and amplify globally.

Attendees got a closer look at how the organisation supports exporters, government agencies and sectors to shift perceptions, open doors, and grow opportunities through consistent national storytelling.

David also outlined practical ways businesses can tap into the NZ Story toolkit, showing that whether you're a small operator or a large exporter, there’s value in aligning with the broader New Zealand narrative.

Overall, the event offered a refreshing mix of inspiration and practical takeaways, leaving everyone feeling more connected to New Zealand’s place in the world and the part we can each play in elevating its story.
